HIV patient with leukemia treated through stem cell transplant

German researchers said they were able to cure an HIV-positive patient with acute myeloid leukemia by destroying his immune system then transplanting donated stem cells containing a gene variation that offers protection from HIV. More than three years after the treatment, the patient does not present any sign of leukemia or HIV, indicating "that cure of HIV has been achieved in this patient," the researchers said. Some experts, however, said the finding might not affect practice, given the dangers posed by wiping out a patient's immune system and the limitation of the treatment to HIV patients with leukemia.
